Greek Culinary Guide

Authentic Hellenic food culture tailored for every dietary preference:

Greek Wines, Spirits & Culinary Pairings

In Hellenic dining culture, beverage and food are inseparable: spirits are accompanied by mezedes, and wine is the soul of company.

Ancient Greek Symposium
🏛️ Historical Legacy: Symposium & Wine Dilution
• The Art of the Krater: In Classical Greece, drinking unmixed wine was deemed barbaric. Wine was blended in a large vessel (krater) with spring water in ratios of 1:3 or 1:2. It was robust, sweet, and preserved with pine resin (the ancestor of modern Retsina).
• Posca: Citizens and soldiers refreshed themselves with Posca (sour wine mixed with water and herbs), which sanitized drinking water and provided endurance on long journeys.
1. Food & Beverage Pairing Cheat Sheet
Xinomavro Wine
🍖 Lamb (Kleftiko, Paidakia Chops) & Beef Stew (Stifado)
Top Pairing: Full-bodied red Xinomavro (Naoussa) or velvety Agiorgitiko (Nemea). High tannins and crisp acidity cut through rich marbling.
